transitmuseumannex.jpgNew York Transit Museum Annex closes for renovations

The New York Transit Museum Gallery Annex and Store at Grand Central Terminal today closed its doors to begin a renovation that will preserve the exhibition space and allow for better display of its unique subway, bus and train-memorabilia.

When it reopens sometime in March, admission to the gallery will remain free, Roxanne Robertson, director of Special Projects for the New York Transit Museum.

Renovations will include new fixtures and lighting. The Transit Museum has been unable to provide a cost estimate for the project.

When the annex reopens, it will debut a new exhibition: “Where New York Began: Archeology And The South Ferry Terminal.”

The main New York Transit Museum is located in Brooklyn Heights, where regular adult admission is $5.

The online Transit Museum Store will also remain open during the annex’s renovations.

Save Ellis Island, the non-profit that’s helping the National Park Service preserve and restore the still-empty buildings at the historic immigration center, will offer a limited number of tours of the abandoned hospital as part of a holiday gift membership special.

“With a donation of $100 or more, the recipient will receive a very special gift, one that cannot be purchased at the Mall - a tour of the unrestored portion of Ellis Island for two,” Save Ellis Island announced in its membership e-mail on Tuesday.

The memberships must be purchased in December. The hard-hat tours will be scheduled in the spring and summer of 2010.

The abandoned portions of the island have been open to tours on a very limited basis since the 2005 OpenHouse NY event. (Pictures.) Tours will begin the Ferry Building, (which was the first abandoned building restored and opened to the public in 2007) and proceed to the still-shuttered hospital side of the island.

dknybeachtowelyellow.jpgNYC beach towels: DKNY skyline to Weegee's Coney

The weather gurus are forecasting the hottest heat of the summer for today, so it seemed high time to roll out a few NYC-themed beach towel offerings.

Though given the erratic forecast, you may want to keep the umbrella list stashed nearby.

The iconic DKNY mural at Houston in Broadway has been painted over by Hollister, but the scene is sort of preserved in a DKNY-branded beach towel on offer through Bed, Bath & Beyond.

The 40-by-70 inch City Skyline beach towel sells for $12.99.

The New York Transit Museum shop has a few beach towel offerings include a vintage subway advertisement.

The Reach the Beach towel measures 59-by-35 inches and is priced at $36.
