The New York Transit Museum Gallery Annex and Store at Grand
Central Terminal today closed its doors to begin a renovation that will
preserve the exhibition space and allow for better display of its unique
subway, bus and train-memorabilia.

Save Ellis Island, the non-profit that’s helping
the National Park Service preserve and restore the still-empty buildings at the
historic immigration center, will offer a limited number of tours of the
abandoned hospital as part of a holiday gift membership special.
“With a
donation of $100 or more, the recipient will receive a very special gift, one
that cannot be purchased at the Mall - a tour of the unrestored
portion of
The memberships must be purchased in December. The hard-hat tours will
be scheduled in the spring and summer of 2010.
The abandoned portions of the island have been
open to tours on a very limited basis since the 2005 OpenHouse

WIRED magazine will open its annual holiday pop-up shop Nov. 21 in the
Meatpacking District, this year with a design assist from Moby, a gaming area
hand-picked by Tony Hawk and a green section curated
by Adrian Grenier.

The pop-up shop will let visitors get their hands on more than 150 items chosen
by the magazine’s editors, including TVs, laptops, cell phones, games, active
gear, home goods and toys. There will be a WIRED Café with
chef demos and wine tastings, Geek Dad Saturdays and Game Day Sundays.
The WIRED Store will be open from noon to 9 p.m.
Wednesday through Sunday and closed Monday and Tuesday. The pop-up takes it
toys and goes home Dec 27.

will occupy the former Zen Palate space at 16th Street, (map,)
the restaurant operator The Riese
Organization announced today.
Nordstrom Rack and Best Buy recently announced plans to take over other
storefronts facing
“We are pleased to be a part of the exciting resurgence of Union Square and to
introduce TGI Friday’s and Tims
to this great neighborhood,” Dennis Riese, Chairman
and CEO of The Riese
Organization said in a statement.
One detail worth noting: While the headline of the company’s press release
touts “TGI Friday’s and Tim Hortons to Occupy 34
Union Square East,” the text of the note uses the word “tentative.”
